Light is the source of energy for the universe and is the most important technical aspect of any photograph. The word "photography" derives from Greek and means, literally, "light writing." Fancy cameras, lenses, and bags of gear are irrelevant unless you have the right light;. When a photographer has a good understanding of light, the results can be amazing. Each Saturday session includes power point inspiration, discussion, hands on demonstrations and mini-assignments.
Series Includes:
(1)Seeing the Light
(2)People Photography a la Natural Light
(3) Night Light with a Digital Camera

$120 for all three workshops, or $45 for each. Register through the Newport Art Museum, 848-2787. Discounts for museum members.

These days every artist should know how to make decent copies of their art suitable for submissions to shows and exhibitions. There are three ingredients needed to make good copies with a digital camera. First, you need to know how to set your camera; second, you need to know how to light your art properly; and third, you need to adjust and manage the files on the computer. In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn all of these things and more. This is a hands-on workshop - bring your camera, instructions book, and a medium sized piece of your art, oil, watercolor, pastel, etc. Bring a sturdy tripod if you have one or you can use the instructor's. If you have a laptop with Photoshop installed, bring that, too, and follow along.
February 9th, 9:30 to 12:30.
Sponsored by The Newport Art Museum/Coleman Center.

Copying Your 2-D Art With A Digital Camera - February 9th, 2012
“Seeing The Light” At The Wickford Art Association - begins May 5th, 2012
This workshop is about “Seeing The Light,” both literally and figuratively. Fancy cameras, lenses and tons of gear won't make you a good photographer, but shooting from your heart and using the "right" light will. Light is one the secret ingredients that make a memorable picture. We’ll address several things that go into making a “good” photograph, light being a most essential one. When a photographer has a good understanding of light, and uses it well, the results can be amazing. In this workshop you’ll learn how to use light more effectively.
We will discuss and practice making pictures in natural light, we’ll play with flash illumination and photograph at night or in low light. We’ll even use flashlights to paint with light. Of course, you’ll need to know how to set your shutter and ISO, etc, but far more important than f/stops and shutter speeds, is the feeling you wish to convey in your image. We will explore ways to make pictures that reveal something of yourself. It is my hope that besides the fun of making pictures together, and besides the techie stuff, you’ll also learn how to awaken the creativity within before you push the button. Join me for five “illuminating” weeks with your digital camera.
The workshop is appropriate for intermediate and advanced digital photographers. Sponsored by Wickford Art Association.

Making Your Travel Photos Pop - Saturday, April 29th, 2012
This workshop is about shooting beyond the postcard. We'll discuss what makes a "good" photograph. Using such elements as moment, frame, light, gesture, and technique, you'll learn how to communicate the emotion you are trying to convey.
Weather permitting we'll take an imaginary "trip" together, a walk-about workshop, photographing things that catch our eye or move our hearts. Afterwards we will project and share your “travel” photos back on the big screen. Bring a bag lunch and munch during this part of the class. To register call South Kingstown Parks and Recreation at 789-9301.
